The Log That Moved

At first glance, it looks like a fallen log. Then the legs give it away.

A large water monitor (Varanus salvator) blends into the dry grass beside the water. Fishing cats may be the focus of my fieldwork, but the same wetlands support a much wider community of wildlife. Water monitors are among the more conspicuous neighbours—even when they do an excellent impression of a log.
